FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

DOES IT COME IN BAGS?

No, our firewood is delivered loose by the cubic metre. We believe storing and delivering in “builder’s bags” may affect the quality of the firewood.

WHERE DO WE DELIVER TO?

We will deliver 1 cubic metre free of charge, within a ten mile radius of our firewood yard (please see map for further details). We can deliver outside of this area, but you would need to increase the load or pay a small delivery charge to cover fuel costs.

CAN I COLLECT MY FIREWOOD?

No, unfortunately due to the location of our firewood and the agreement with the land owner, we can’t allow collection.

HOW BIG IS A CUBIC METRE?

If you imagine a cube, 1 metre wide by 1 metre high by 1 metre long full of logs that’s what you get! But seriously, we know it’s hard to envisage, so we have included a picture.

HOW BIG ARE THE LOGS?

Our split and unsplit logs are generally around 25cm in length and 10cm – 15cm in diameter, see pictures. But we can cut and split your logs tailored to your needs at no extra cost.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED/HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

If you are new to buying firewood, then you may not be sure how much you need. It will depend on how you are using your firewood, if you have one wood burner or are heating the whole house and how bad the weather is. On average our customers buy 2 cubic metres and that usually lasts the winter. If you are unsure then please contact us for further information.

HOW SHOULD I STORE IT?

Your firewood will be delivered seasoned and dry and ideally it should be kept this way. Due to the time of year we are normally delivering, it maybe raining. Firewood may get slightly damp in transit or while you are stacking it. This is not the end of the world, just leave it in the dry for a few days or bring some in and leave by the fire if you need it sooner.

DO WE STACK OR MOVE THE FIREWOOD?

No, we don’t do either and our firewood prices reflect this. We would rather you pay for our firewood than our time making a nice neat stack. Of course, if you didn’t have the time and are prepared to pay a little extra then we would gladly do this for you.

HOW DO I PAY FOR THE FIREWOOD?

Preferred methods of payment is cash on delivery, but we can take a cheque or you can pay online. Unfortunately we can’t take card payments over the phone.

FIREWOOD

At Midland Tree Specialists, we are naturally committed to recycling 100% of the waste we produce. What isn't chipped and used for Biomass, is processed as firewood. Wood is one of the original and most traditional forms of fuel but in years it has been replaced by fossil fuels like coal, gas, oil and electricity. However, wood is a perfect source of renewable energy and has many environmental benefits.

The following is an extract from the Firewood Buyers Guide

WHY YOU SHOULD ONLY BURN DRY WOOD!

It is important that you only ever burn dry wood. Burning wood with a high moisture content causes pollution, will quickly build up flammable resins in your chimney and is very inefficient. Unseasoned wood may well be cheaper to buy than seasoned wood but it will require you to store it for a year or more before it is ready to burn. When burnt efficiently wood produces virtually no smoke and is carbon neutral which means it does not add to the greenhouse gases, which are associated with global warming. If harvested from sustainable sources, wood is a completely renewable source of energy.

IS ALL WOOD THE SAME?

You can spend hours reading the considered thoughts of the pros and cons of different species of wood and their characteristics when burnt on an open fire or stove but be aware that when fully seasoned, the calorific value of all wood types is very similar by weight. You could thus argue that there is no such thing as bad wood - it is just that you will need far more logs from some species compared to others to achieve the same heat output.

BUYING FIREWOOD - QUANTITIES, THINGS TO REMEMBER!

One of the biggest issues firewood buyers face is understanding what the quantities of wood that are actually being offered for sale by firewood suppliers.

There are so many variables in the wood supplied that makes it particularly difficult to achieve a description or measurement that is both practical and meaningful for both the supplier and customer. Firewood logs are meant to be measured by volume, usually cubic meters. Wood is rarely sold by weight as the weight will vary dramatically depending on the species of the logs in the pile.

BUILDERS BAG / TON BAG / DUMPY BAG OF LOGS.

Remember that a builders bag is not a ton of wood and it is not a cubic meter of wood (probably around 0.6 m3) and don't let anyone tell you any different! Again, it is likely that the logs inside the bag have been loosely loaded so expect the volume of your purchase to reduce if you make a nice stack of the firewood. Be aware that only dry, seasoned wood should be stored in a builders bag; as there is little opportunity for air circulation damp or wet wood will quickly develop mould if left in the bag.

SO, WHERE DOES OUR FIREWOOD COME FROM?

All of the timber we sell for firewood is a by-product from our tree surgery operations, primarily from condemned trees. Recently, we have found that our clients want to keep the timber resulting from their tree work to use as fuel themselves. Subsequently we find that we are cutting/stacking timber and leaving it on site rather than taking it back to our yard, which is better for the environment!

HOW DO WE PRODUCE SEASONED FIREWOOD?

Immediately after the timber has been cut down, it is transported to our firewood processing yard. Once there, it is cut and split to size, stacked on pallets in our dry and airy weather proof barn, stored and left to season for a minimum of six - twelve months, but usually longer. It is now delivered ready for your fire. This process ensures that the wood is burnt to its full potential with minimum smoke and maximum heat.
